Faculty: Faculty of Science Department: Department of Mathematics Hours per week: 36 to 40 Application deadline:

At the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University, we are looking for a PhD candidate to join our project "Real and logarithmic counting invariants -- new connections" on the real and logarithmic enumerative geometry of vector bundles, and related subjects.

Your job

Enumerative geometry is a field of algebraic geometry with a history dating back to Ancient Greece and with exciting modern developments due to deep connections with theoretical physics. Particularly important are invariants counting vector bundles (or sheaves) -- central objects in modern geometry and physics. However, the theory is mostly developed over the complex numbers and in projective spaces severely limiting its scope.

In this project, we address this by systematically developing real and logarithmic sheaf counting invariants across different dimensions.This Vici project is comprised of 2 PhD positions and 2 postdoc positions which will be filled during the period September 2026 - September 2031. You will join a collaborative research group that also includes PhD candidates and postdocs employed on an ERC Consolidator Grant.

You will be part of the Utrecht Geometry Centre , which encompasses all the research groups in pure mathematics within the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University. Our expertise covers a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from algebraic and differential geometry to algebraic topology, logic, and number theory.

During your PhD programme, up to 15% of your time will be devoted to teaching activities within our curriculum. Your work as a PhD candidate will be complemented by a complete training programme within the Graduate School of Natural Sciences .

Your qualities

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled colleague who possesses the following characteristics:

  • a Master’s degree in mathematics;
  • strong analytic skills;
  • proficiency in English, both written and spoken;
  • it is a great advantage when you have taken some basic algebraic geometry courses or have done (or are doing) a Master’s thesis in algebraic geometry.

Our offer

  • a position for 18 months, with an extension to a total of four years upon successful assessment in the first 18 months;
  • a gross monthly salary starting at ¤ 3,059 in the first year and increasing annually up to ¤3,881 in the fourth year, based on full-time employment (salary scale P under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU));
  • 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
  • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.

In addition to the terms of employment laid down in the CAO NU, Utrecht University also offers a range of its own schemes for employees. This includes arrangements for professional development , various types of leave, and options for sports and cultural activities . You can also tailor your employment conditions through our Terms of Employment Options Model. In this way, we encourage you to keep investing in your personal and professional development.
