FI: First year institution (students enrolled at the UvA for the first time, excludes switchers and transition students) FPI: First year programme institution (students who enrolled for a specific programme for the first time, includes students who first did a Bachelor's degree at UvA) Both Bachelor's and Master's programmes at the UvA have considerably more first year students this year than last year, with 17% and 19% increases, respectively. The total number of students at the UvA will increase by 10%, from 35,511 to 39,051. The increase is among both Dutch and foreign students. There are several possible explanations for the sharp rise, all of which are related to the corona crisis. These are the provisional figures as of 17 October 2020. The final figures will be available in February 2021. The picture we are seeing at the UvA is in line with that at other Dutch universities and the universities in neighbouring countries.
