Shaping the future of materials using artificial intelligence

"AI is an indispensable tool to achieve the material transition needed for a sustainable society", says Bernd Ensing, associate professor of Computational Chemistry at the Faculty of Science. He leads the newly established research priority area known by its acronym AI4SMM. Written in full, it is quite a mouthful: Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Molecules and Materials. The first AI4SMM research projects focus on materials such as salts for energy storage, sustainable steel, safe additives for plastics and plant proteins for novel foods. AI is changing the world. We have become familiar with applications like ChatGPT and Dall-E that create texts and images for us with ease. AI can also make a big difference in the field of molecules and materials.
