Postdoc Position: Algebraic Topology
Apply now The Department of Mathematics at Radboud University is looking for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher to strengthen its Algebraic Topology group and contribute to an exciting research project in homotopy theory. As a postdoctoral researcher you will work with Dr Magdalena Kedziorek and Dr Steffen Sagave on a project related to homotopy theory. The position is part of the project ’ Symmetry on the interface of topology and higher algebra ’, which is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). You will be expected to communicate your findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals. You will be encouraged to take part in the activities of the algebraic topology group and the mathematical community in general, by participating in conferences, workshops and seminars. There is no teaching load; however, participation in teaching activities is advised (for up to 10% of your working time). You will mentor PhD candidates and have direct contact with undergraduate students. I try to help budding academics feel just as at home at Radboud University as I do. Laura van Niftrik Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Science Laura van Niftrik is a Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Science. "Strong collegiality is one of the unique characteristics of Radboud University. There is a safe, friendly atmosphere. It’s easy to collaborate with colleagues from other research groups and faculties, and I have never seen any kind of competitiveness between my co-workers. The university still has some way to go when it comes to diversity, whether we’re talking about gender, culture or ethnicity. At the same time, I’m glad to see that a great deal of attention is being paid to this issue. This is evident in such practices as mentorship, which is something from which I’ve also benefited during my academic career. Spending time with an experienced academic so that you can brainstorm and bring each other up to speed on things can be quite helpful. Now that I’m a professor myself, I’ve also taken on the role of mentor. This has allowed me to help budding academics to feel just as at home at Radboud University as I do." Where you will be workingAlgebraic topology is one of the research areas of the Department of Mathematics at Radboud University. The field is represented by Magdalena Kedziorek and Steffen Sagave. The department has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with researchers in related areas including algebraic and arithmetic geometry, differential geometry, operator algebras and representation theory. There is a good balance of senior and junior staff, as well as of Dutch and international researchers, and there are research seminars and informal events throughout the year. Moreover, the algebraic topologists at Radboud University are part of a larger network of Dutch algebraic topologists who regularly interact and meet for seminars and other events. The Mathematics Department has more than 20 PhD candidates, six of whom currently work in algebraic topology and related areas. The department is an open and supportive environment - members from groups that are underrepresented in mathematics are particularly encouraged to apply.
