On Friday 17 June 2022, the Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of Ruben Houweling, Professor of Labour Law at Erasmus School of Law, as new crown member of the Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER). Crown members are independent experts. Besides these independent experts the SER embodies employers’ representatives and union representatives.
The SER is the main body to submit solicited (and unsolicited) advice to the Dutch government and the parliament on national and international social and economic policy. Harriėt Schelhaas, Dean of Erasmus School of Law, is very pleased with the appointment: ’With his expertise, Ruben Houweling is the ideal crown member. He has a broad interest and a large substantive knowledge of labour law. Ruben has the ability to connect theory with practice and social developments. Our School is very proud that he joins the SER.’
Ruben Houweling about his appointment: ’I feel enormously honoured and look forward to the Council’s work. Society and the labour market face enormous challenges: staff shortages, the growing division in society, the climate (job) challenge and major changes in the way we work (robotisation and digitisation). I look forward to deploying my expertise and thus contributing to a sustainable socio-economic policy.’
