Measures to restore biodiversity in peatlands fall short
Several experimental measures taken at Frisian farms to restore biodiversity in former peatlands, are unsuccessful. Three different ways in which the water levels were raised, did not have the desired effect. This is according to research by ecologist Tom Heuts of Radboud University. 77% of Dutch wetlands (bogs, marshes) have been drained, mainly for agriculture and cattle breeding.

Innovative Breakthrough in Sustainable Agriculture
Researchers from the University of Twente (Netherlands) and Bayreuth Develop Microplastic-Free Encapsulation for Crop Protection Agents. They recently published their findings in the scientific journal Advanced Materials The sustainable application of crop protection agents such as pesticides is one of the greatest challenges in modern agriculture.

Growing demand for organic eggs from hens with better welfare
If the chicken had a say, what would poultry farms look like? At Herenboeren, chickens are kept in small groups in mobile houses with outdoor runs. Yet even in such an environment there is a risk of damage from feather pecking and damage to foot pads. Can this be prevented with the help of straw, an adjustment in operations that poultry farmers can implement without much effort? That is what master's students in veterinary medicine Koen Riep and Jeroen Imholz are investigating.

Costs of scaring grass-eating barnacle geese often outweigh the benefits
At the current population sizes, the practice of scaring geese off pastures in the province of Friesland probably ends up costing more than it saves. Utrecht University ecologist Monique de Jager and colleagues from Wageningen University and Research, the University of Amsterdam, and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) conclude this based on a model study , that was conducted as part of the Dutch contribution to European goose management.

Calculate the land-use impact of your diet
Agriculture is one of the leading causes of human induced land-use change globally. Our food consumption and production, especially in industrialised countries, is thereby damaging the planet.

Better welfare for chickens and pigs
The health and welfare of animals that produce our food is of great importance. Researchers from the University of Utrecht and the Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Nutrition (ILVO) in Flanders, among others, received almost eight million euros from the European Union to develop in cooperation with the industry innovative measuring equipment to monitor the welfare of broiler chickens and fattening pigs as they are loaded, unloaded, transported and slaughtered.

Food safety monitoring could be more effective
How can we make food safety monitoring as effective as possible with the available resources? That is the question that the Chair of Food Safety Economics is tackling. This is the central topic of the inaugural address of special professor Ine van der Fels-Klerx on October 20, 2022. The title of her speech is: 'Integrating economics in food safety monitoring: what, where and how?' Food safety is under pressure Despite the fact that food in the Netherlands and Europe has never been so safe, as it is today, there are all kinds of developments that put this safety under pressure.

Nitrogen boundaries exceeded in many world regions
It has long been known that humanity is exceeding planetary boundaries for nitrogen use. Scientists have now mapped those exceedances regionally for the first time. Whereas countries in north-western Europe and parts of India and China are emitting far too much nitrogen, there is actually room for intensification of nitrogen use across much of Africa and South America.

Trial with three vaccines against bird flu
Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) has started a trial with bird flu vaccination. In Lelystad vaccines against bird flu of three different pharmaceutical companies are tested. In the trial vaccines against the current H5 viruses are tested in laying hens. "More information about the potential vaccines against bird flu is required before these can be applied in the field," explains bird flu researcher Nancy Beerens.

Agriculture drives more than 90% of tropical deforestation
Halting deforestation will require a step-change in approach, and to be effective measures must address underlying and indirect roles of agriculture, says a recently published study in Science. This research finds that between 90 and 99 percent of all deforestation in the tropics is driven directly or indirectly by agriculture.

Meat in a database
Organic meat is more expensive than non-organic meat. But does it taste better too? Wageningen researcher Hans Spoolder wants to answer this question in the mEATquality project. For this European project, data is being collected in different countries. A data warehouse will be set up, where all the data can be collected.

Grassland bird food supply could be under threat from pesticides
Researchers have found 129 different pesticides on 23 cattle farms in Gelderland that likely have a negative impact on grassland birds. The Buijs Agro-services and WECF Nederland research agencies published a report on this in 2019, and have recently extended this research in collaboration with Radboud scientists, publishing their results in the journal Science of the Total Environment.
