What height says about the development of our prosperity and health
As a boy, did you grow up among sisters in around 1850? Then you probably grew taller than a boy who only had brothers. Someone's height says a lot about the quality of life in their first 20 years. Malnutrition, disease and hard labour can inhibit people's growth. Historian Björn Quanjer studied how the height of Dutch men between 1850 and 1950 was influenced by the households in which they grew up.

Google Maps for 14th to 17th century trade routes
If you would like to know how long it took to get from Eindhoven to Deventer around 600 years ago, the updated version of Viabundus - which is like a variation of Google Maps for the 1350-1650 period - can be used to calculate just how much time was needed. One of the things that the project's researchers managed to achieve this year was a more accurate map of Brabant's road network.

Women suffered gender-specific violence during the Spanish Civil War and Franco's dictatorship, says archaeologist and forensic anthropologist Laura Muñoz-Encinar in a recent publication. The researcher excavated mass graves to find new evidence about the specific forms of repression that women suffered during this period of the Spanish contemporary history.
