Costs of scaring grass-eating barnacle geese often outweigh the benefits
At the current population sizes, the practice of scaring geese off pastures in the province of Friesland probably ends up costing more than it saves. Utrecht University ecologist Monique de Jager and colleagues from Wageningen University and Research, the University of Amsterdam, and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) conclude this based on a model study , that was conducted as part of the Dutch contribution to European goose management.

Better welfare for chickens and pigs
The health and welfare of animals that produce our food is of great importance. Researchers from the University of Utrecht and the Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Nutrition (ILVO) in Flanders, among others, received almost eight million euros from the European Union to develop in cooperation with the industry innovative measuring equipment to monitor the welfare of broiler chickens and fattening pigs as they are loaded, unloaded, transported and slaughtered.

Trial with three vaccines against bird flu
Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) has started a trial with bird flu vaccination. In Lelystad vaccines against bird flu of three different pharmaceutical companies are tested. In the trial vaccines against the current H5 viruses are tested in laying hens. "More information about the potential vaccines against bird flu is required before these can be applied in the field," explains bird flu researcher Nancy Beerens.

Grassland bird food supply could be under threat from pesticides
Researchers have found 129 different pesticides on 23 cattle farms in Gelderland that likely have a negative impact on grassland birds. The Buijs Agro-services and WECF Nederland research agencies published a report on this in 2019, and have recently extended this research in collaboration with Radboud scientists, publishing their results in the journal Science of the Total Environment.
