Job description

  1. Are you fascinated by the challenges of modeling sun-oriented 3D environments across varying time scales and spatial resolutions to improve the functioning and efficiency of solar energy technologies in buildings?
  2. Are you eager to explore innovative techniques for simulating and analyzing solar irradiance in complex built environments, with a focus on solar energy systems?
  3. Are you our next PhD in sustainable energy systems, focusing on applying 3D modeling and big data analytics to enhance solar energy technologies in urban settings?

Job Description

You will engage in cutting-edge research focusing on the development of sun-oriented 3D environments. These environments will be analyzed, simulated, developed, and experimentally tested across varying time scales--from minutes to years--and spatial dimensions ranging from centimeters to kilometers. The work is anchored in the use of remote sensing and big data analytics to assess solar irradiance, temperatures, and humidity in built environments.

You will interact with researchers from various disciplines as part of the Heritage (HEat Robustness In relation To AGEing cities) program. For more details, please visit Heritage Program . you will contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy systems that incorporate solar energy as a key component. These systems will be designed to be implemented in aged neighborhoods and buildings, addressing the growing need for energy-efficient urban solutions.

Key Challenges:

  • Develop and refine 3D models that simulate solar irradiance and environmental conditions over different time scales and spatial ranges.
  • Employ big data analytics and remote sensing techniques to enhance the accuracy and applicability of these models.

Research Group Embedding:

  • You will collaborate with researchers from diverse disciplines within the Heritage program and work closely with experts in areas such as remote sensing, energy systems, and urban sustainability to contribute to interdisciplinary research efforts.

Societal Relevance:

  • Your research will contribute to the sustainability of urban areas by improving the design and implementation of solar energy systems in aging neighborhoods, as well as addressing challenges like heat stress in urban environments.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in a relevant field such as engineering (with a focus on energy engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline), with demonstrated interest in Computer Science, AI, or Data.
  • A research-oriented mindset with a strong interest in 3D modeling, remote sensing, and sustainable energy systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with various partners.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months. You will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.
  • Salary and benefits (such as a pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. ¤2,872 max. ¤3,670).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. At TU/e we challenge you to take charge of your own learning process .
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children’s day care and sports facilities.
  • An allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.
